Situated in South Gippsland, in the southeastern corner of Australia, Bass Phillip was established in 1979 by Phillip Jones. This iconic estate specialises in exceptional pinot noir and chardonnay from 14-ha of densely planted estate vineyards, where the fruit is grown without irrigation and cropped at very low levels to achieve the desired flavour development. The vineyards have been organic since 1993 and biodynamic since 2002. Minimal human intervention is practiced wherever possible. The deep mineral-rich soils, natural high humidity, and cooler temperatures of South Gippsland contribute to intense flavours, aromatics, and exceptional length. In the cellar, the wines are handcrafted in a natural, traditional style by Jean-Marie Fourrier, the famed winemaker of great Gevrey-Chambertin red Burgundies including Le Chambertin, Clos St Jacques and and Les Amoureuses. These are vibrant yet graceful, age-worthy wines from one of Australia’s best and most sought-after producers. With exquisite texture and profound complexity, they are never excessive in tannins or alcohol in their youth, and with age will develop an intensity of flavour in the finish framed by strong minerality and natural acidity.
