Situated in Nuits St-Georges, the eponymous Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair dates from 2001 when Thibault took over an estate that had been in his family for 250 years, but which had long been contracted out to sharecroppers. His cousin is the famous Vicomte Liger-Belair of Vosne Romanee, who represents the other branch in the Liger-Belair family tree.
This exceptional domaine holds some of the most important vineyard plots in all of Burgundy, including impressive parcels of Richebourg and Clos de Vougeot. However, the jewel in the crown is its large parcel of old-vine (60 years+) Les Saint-Georges, the most prestigious premier cru in Nuits Saint-Georges.
Thibault immediately implemented organic farming, and by 2005 the estate was certified and fully biodynamic, with horses used to plough the vineyards where possible. He seeks more than anything to allow the expression of place in his wines, working the vines with the utmost respect for their varied terroirs, the richness of which demands that each individual parcel be worked uniquely. His winemaking style is meticulous, but very natural and gentle, from low yields to fermentation timing; restricted use of sulphur dioxide, limited use of new barrels and other practical methods that allow each wine to reflect its fabulous origin.
