Located in Gimmeldingen in the Mittelhaardt of the Pfalz, Rhineland Palatinate, southwest Germany, A.Christmann is an historic family estate dating to the 16th Century. Today, it is run by father-daughter duo Steffen and Sophie Christmann, who represent the 7th and 8th generations.
The Christmanns cultivate 22-ha of prized vineyards showcasing diverse soils and microclimates around Gimmeldingen and Königsbach. Riesling is the dominant variety planted, comprising nearly 70% of the vines. Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc are also grown.
With a philosophy of producing authentic, artisanal wines in harmony with nature, the estate has been farming organically (certified) and following biodynamic principles for more than 20 years. Conversion to biodynamics commenced in 2002, and since 2015 A.Christmann has been a prominent member of Respekt-Biodyn. Viticulture is orientated to the phases of the moon, and biodynamic preparations and compost are produced on-site. Yields are low and the fruit is gently hand-harvested. In the cellar, less is more, with slow pressing, spontaneous fermentations, and aging in wooden barrels.
The calcareous marl soils of the family’s vineyards are very similar to that of Burgundy, and Sophie Christmann has spearheaded a renewed focus on Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) at the estate.
Dry, powerful, textural Rieslings and long, elegant Pinot Noirs from some of the best sites in the Palatinate Mittelhaardt.
