Founded in 1982 by Stephen George, Ashton Hills has an international reputation as one of Australia’s finest producers of pinot noir and cool climate white wines.
A tiny, unique site in the Piccadilly Valley sub region of the Adelaide Hills - widely considered the best growing area for pinot noir in South Australia - the 3 hectare, dry-grown vineyard is planted at 570 metres above sea level, on a ridge just below the summit of Mount Lofty. At this high altitude, the vineyard is climatically different to the rest of the Adelaide Hills, being significantly colder and wetter.
Stephen’s pioneering work at Ashton Hills was one of the catalysts for the development of the Adelaide Hills as a wine region. For over 30 years he experimented with up to 26 pinot noir clones, ultimately settling on five that are now showcased in the acclaimed Reserve and Estate Pinot Noirs - wonderful wines with lifted perfume and elegant structure. The estate also produces an excellent sparkling wine and the acclaimed and highly exclusive Ashton Hills riesling.
