Founded in 1996 and now owned by the Gjergja family, Kooyong is an acclaimed chardonnay, pinot gris and pinot noir producer located on the cool, ocean-influenced Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. Most of the estate’s vineyard holdings are on the northern side of the peninsular, in the sub-region of Tuerong. There are 40 hectares under vine here, on five distinct sites. The nearby Devilbend Reserve is home to many native water birds, and the name Kooyong means “where the wild fowl gather”.
The Gjergya family is passionate about biological viticultural practices. Sustainability is a key objective and only natural fertilisers and ecologically acceptable pest and disease control practices are employed. Water reclamation systems are in place to turn wastewater into irrigation. The winemaking is sensitive and minimalist - grapes are all hand harvested and fermentations are spontaneous, using only ambient yeasts. Site-expressive, elegant, and complex, the resulting wines are fresher than classic Australian styles.
Produced in limited quantities, the Kooyong wines are made at the Gjergja family’s state-of-the-art winery, restaurant, and hotel complex at nearby Port Phillip Estate. One of Australia’s most exciting food and wine destinations, this is an architectural landmark, with monumental rammed-earth walls and spectacular views. The architecture is the embodiment of Kooyong’s pervasive philosophies of sustainability, quality and expression of place.
