Founded in 1996 and named for the massive quartz deposit that lies beneath their vineyards, Quartz Reef specialises in premium Central Otago single-estate méthode tradionnelle sparkling and pinot noir, showcasing the winemaking talents of Austrian-born Rudi Bauer.
There are currently 30 hectares under cultivation on the sundrenched slopes of Quartz Reef’s beautiful vineyards in the Bendigo subregion of Central Otago – pristine yet rugged terrain in New Zealand’s southernmost wine-growing district. Practicing organic and biodynamic viticulture, the estate was certified Demeter Biodynamic in 2011 - the culmination of a four-year process. The precise requirements of biodynamic practice demand rigorous attention to farming methods that are in harmony and balance with nature. This holistic approach includes higher plant density and less yield per vine, allowing more intense flavour development.
Quartz Reef’s sublime pinots are made to be aged, and reach their peak many years from release. This is an unusual approach for a winery - New World pinots are generally released and enjoyed soon after bottling.
Quartz Reef’s sparkling wines are considered to be the best in New Zealand and are also made in a style that benefits from aging.
