Jim Barry started making wine in Clare Valley in 1947 after graduating with a diploma in viticulture from the now-famous Roseworthy Agricultural University. He took up the offer to work at the Clare Valley Winery and became the first qualification holding winemaker in Clare Valley.
In 1959, Jim, with his wife Nancy, purchased their first piece of land on the northern outskirts of Clare. Using the knowledge and experience gained over many years, he set up his own winery in 1973 and his first vintage was in 1974. During his 57 years of winemaking, he experienced many changes. “When I first came to the Clare Valley, we moved grapes around with a horse and cart.
Today our business is on a global scale but there is one thing that hasn’t changed. That is the quality of our wine. Ultimately, the wine itself is the most important thing. “Jim Barry passed away in 2004 and now his 3 sons are continuing on with the tradition that he built, and running the winery.
