Established in 1993 by Hans-Oliver Spanier, Battenfeld Spanier is based in Hohen-Sülzen on the southernmost tip of the Wonnegau district of the wine-growing region of Rheinhessen, Germany. Together with his wife, Carolin, Hans-Oliver produces some of Germany's most exciting, minimum-intervention dry wines from almost 30-ha of limestone-rich vineyards centred around the villages of Hohen-Sulzen, Nieder-Florsheim and Molsheim. Following organic principles from the start, the estate introduced biodynamic methods in 2005 and is now certified biodynamic. The restoration and upkeep of the microbial life in the soil has led to a significant strengthening of the deeply rooted vines. Their growth is more homogenous and they are more resistant to changes in heat and humidity, which helps to prevent diseases and overripening. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are fermented spontaneously in the most natural way possible. The resulting wines are excellent – bursting with energy, vibrant and savoury with a cool minerality.
